The Turkish Jewish alliance-friendship actually goes back to the 15th century and the Ottoman Empire, starting with Fatih, the Conqueror of Constantinople who taught and encouraged tolerance of all minorities. In 1490 when the jews escaped Spain, they were welcomed by the Ottoman Empire and throughout the years Turks, Jews and Arabs lived peacefully under the same roof.

In the 1930's, after the establishment of the Republic, jewish scientists who escaped Nazi torture were also welcomed to Turkey. In 1949, Turkey was the first secular musilim country to recognize Israel. In the 50's, trade pacts were signed and positive relations kept developing with the help of the USA. 60s and 70s were not as good because of political shifts.

I lived in Turkey in those years through a Military coup, in fact I was picked (with another elementary school student) to greet the Prime Minister Menderes, who came to a National Celebration and who was later hanged, sorry to be so graphic.....) I was there through the anarchy of the leftists and came to the USA in the early 70's.

All my years in Turkey I attended school with Ermenians, Greeks and Jews with absolute integration and no hostilities and to this day we remain best of friends. TURKEY-ISRAEL relations improved once again in the 80's and 90's when Turkey supported the first Gulf War and the USSR came down.

Diplomats were exchanged and trade and anti terrorism pacts were signed, tourism sectors flourished between the two countries.Turkey encouraged Palestinians for moderation and peace. Turkey gave water to Israel and Israel trained turkish military Intelligence.

Then came once more a political shift. It is my hope that my native country does not slip, that my adopted country remains blessed, that we can all keep on top of issues tirelessly, and the biggest hope of course, is for peace to prevail. (dont mean to sound like Miss America:))))

JOC SNOWTUBING PARTY!

Theninth annual JOC snowtubing party will take place on Saturday night,Jan 24th at Ski Campgaw, only 35 minutes from the GW bridge.
Woo Hoo!

For this years trip, we are switching back toCampgaw, where there is a nice warm lodge right next to the tubinglanes. That way, if we go on the coldest night of the year, like we didlast year, we wont lose any fingers :)

This is always one of JOCs biggest and most fun events of the year. Whether you
are new and have been lurking on the list for a long time, or have been a
regular for a while, dont miss out on this fun event!

SCHEDULE

After Shabbat: Carpools depart from NYC and other locations
7:30-8:00: Arrive at Ski Campgaw, receive snowtubing ticket.
8:00-9:55: Enjoy snowtubing!
9:55- 10:00: The annual JOC tradition of clothing optional snowtubing. Yeah, baby!!
10:30: We get kicked out.

Throughout the night, we will be ableto relax in their lodge which is right next to the tubing run, wherethere will be a light dinner (pita, spreads, veges, fruits etc...). All food, is, of course, strictly Kosher.

PRICE
Recession special! The price of the event is $29 which includes a 2 hour snowtubing session and light dinner.

TRANSPORTATION
We will be getting there via carpool.A week prior, we will send out a spreadsheet of drivers, and you willbe responsible to make arrangement to get to Campgaw.
If there is demand, we will rent a busthat would leave from the Upper West Side, but a heads up that suchrides are expensive ($30 a person?)

WHAT IS THE TUBING LIKE?
The tubing largely depends on weather conditions. Sometimes the course
is fast and icy, other times it is more slushy (which makes for great
snowball conditions). In past years, it has been quite an adrenaline rush, but there are no guarantees.
Either way, youll have a great time!

WHAT SHOULD I WEAR?
Expect cold weather, my friends! Layer up with a shirt (synthetic is best), a sweater (fleece) and a warm jacket. Ifyou have ski pants, thats your best bet for your lowerhalf. Non-cotton socks are best for your feet, and dont forget gloves,and a warm hat. A neck gaiter is a nice plus. Skirts are doable.

If you have reason tobelieve that I, or other mischievous folk, will be tripping you frombehind with tubes, then wear butt pads :)

IS THIS FOR SINGLES ONLY?
No! JOC is an outdoors club open to all, although, a vast majority of
attendees will be single.

WHAT IS THE DEADLINE?
Spaceis allotted on a first come, first served basis. There are 125 spotsavailable, and I expect that we will fill up. As we have purchasedevery available ticket for that session, there is no possibility forlast minute add-ons once we are full.

Yeshivat Tiferet Yerushalayim - Shiurim: "They gathered the Bnei Yisroel in front of the rock and rebuked them, 'Listen rebellious ones, from this rock we will bring forth for you water.' (perek 20, posuk 10)

Moshe proceeded to strike the rock twice, water flowed forth in abundance.

The commentators endeavor to find the flaw in the conduct of Moshe and Aharon which warranted the punishment brought upon them.

Rashi comments that Moshe was commanded to speak to the rock and instead he hit the rock. The Rambam explains that the fault was to be found in Moshe's reaction to the complaint of the people. He allowed himself to be provoked and come to anger.

The Ramban questions Rashi's view. Hashem told Moshe to take his staff. Of what purpose did he require this of Moshe if not for him to hit the rock? The Ramban also differs with the Rambam on his interpretation of Moshe's reaction. Moshe was not brought to anger. His words to the Jewish people were meant as a rebuke for their lack of faith in Hashem.

The Ramban also questions Aharon's role in the affair. Not once, in his entire life, did Aharon HaKohen ever allow himself to get angry. Aharon was not the one who hit the rock. Why then, is Aharon included in Moshe's punishment?"
